Students searched for various Roman-influenced items we have in our own courtyard.
End-Products
Students researched one part of Ancient Rome and planned, drafted, and revised a product that would inform an audience about how influential the Romans still are to our modern world.
TRIP ITINERARY
Jenna and I have decided to do a Rome Itinerary because we were both working on the same subject, Rome Education. A Rome Itinerary is where Jenna and I plan to go to Italy and Turkey to go and see three specific ancient libraries. Those libraries are the Library of Celsus, the Library of Pergamum, and the Library of Malatestiana. In Ancient Rome, many libraries only had scrolls instead of books, and eventually the Roman Empire saw the development from scrolls to books. We research boarding passes to calculate the exact cost of a trip to the places we need to go. We have also planned the hotel that we are going to stay at (Hilton Izmir) and the restaurants that we are going to eat breakfast, lunch, and dinner at. The helpful criticism that our friends suggested has improved our project. Instead of printing out all the pictures, we traced some instead, and made the work that we had done before much neater and more organized. Joseph O and Jenna F

Mimi and I created a booklet about a little boy in London who travels back in time to Ancient Rome, and he discovers what Roman Numerals mean. He sees them throughout Rome at places like graveyards and the market. Our project improved after we shared our idea with the class. Our idea improved because they told us to have a reason why he goes to Big Ben, and they also gave us the idea to have him go on a field trip which improved our story a lot. We created this story because we were both very interested in Roman Numerals. Ella D and Mimi H
For the English and history, project I created a myth about how and why the testudo formation was made. Throughout our myth you will see some very true facts but some false information about why the formation was made. We do not know the exact reason why it was made but if you read our myth it will help you understand how it improved their military strategies. Jace P and Bryson Y
For our Project de Roma, Karen and I chose a storyboard. Our storyboard is occupied by a very touching tale written by Karen and me. It is about a young girl named Echo that undergoes a biased Roman environment. Her love for medicine causes her to make an important decision that changes Roman history. This fictional story was very fun to create because I was able to experiment and relate it back to our society. Overall, this project took a lot of time and very fun! Karen and I worked very hard, especially on the Final Draft. Our project has flourished since our Rough Draft, because we cleaned it up, and made it beautiful. Karen and I make a great pair. Karen G and Aiya T
For my project I decided to represent the loss of a common language after Rome fell and the languages that evolved from the Vulgar Latin they spoke. I displayed this through an online picture book that is based off of three friends who lived in Rome at the time Rome fell. I got feedback from my peers on my first couple of drafts that suggested I needed to make it more understandable for a child. I decided to change the lines for each page so that they were simple, and added cartoon images to aid the story. I chose to make this project because I think it gives important information as to how some languages we speak today, came to be. Lily M
In the Rome project, Elena and I worked together creating a picture book comparing the modern day United States and Ancient Rome’s executive and legislative branch. In our story, “Lost in Rome,” the seventh graders at Rivercrest Middle School visit the White House for a field trip. At the beginning of their tour, the tour guide tells them a story explaining how Ancient Rome and the US government are similar. The story is about a plebeian boy getting lost in Rome and unintentionally stumbling upon the Senate all while looking for the Consul Election. We first began researching facts about our topic and then thought about how to put our information we researched into a project. We took feedback and criticism from our classmates, Mr. Straub, and Mr. Evans on how to improve our project along the way. One way we improved from our classmates’ feedback was by displaying our all our information in a more organized way, making it easy for readers to understand. While doing this project, I learned many interesting facts about both governments I didn’t know before. Elena E and Taylor N
Grant and I are working on a comic strip about Ancient Rome. My subject that I focused on was the Roman newspaper and Grant’s was military. Our comic is about a kid who has a dad in the military and the kid learns info about the dad through the Acta Diurna, which is the Roman version of the newspaper. The reason we thought this was a good idea was because we thought we could incorporate a part of the Roman newspaper and Roman military into one story. When we presented our project to the class, we got suggestions and most people told us they were confused because we jumped around too much. To deal with this we added more transitions and helped explain in more detail what was going on. Mason M and Grant N
For my Ancient Rome project, I decided to make a short children's book about a young boy who goes back in time to Ancient Rome and flows through an aqueduct on his adventure. I wanted to do this because my topic was aqueducts, and I wanted to incorporate time travel and add some solid information about aqueducts at the same time. I’m doing this project by myself and that makes it a little bit more challenging to draw and write everything myself, but it is coming along quite nicely. My first draft of my project didn’t contain enough information about aqueducts and my pictures needed improvement, so in my finally draft I added more info and improved my pictures and story line. Harrison S
For our project, we are making a book about the sundial. The sundial was made by Theodosius I. In our book, we are talking about how Theodosius II or his son, made a sundial watch. It’s talking about how he was always late and so his dad made a sundial, but Theodosus's son made a sundial watch so he could wear it anywhere. Theodosius II has made a smaller version of the sundial and a more modern version, too. Our book is basically about what the sundial is, who made it, how it works, and so much more! We improved our pictures and details. We also created some facts. Cate C and Kristin S
In my project, I explained the transformation of money from Imperial Times to the current year of 2017. I created a children’s book inspired by Don Quixote for my project. I know that many countries had a currency of coins, but the country that I will focus on is Ancient Rome. My project reflects how money has advanced over time, and I used several ideas and suggestions from peers on my project Aiden M
Rusty, Ryan, and I have worked together on our Rome project. We have created a comic strip to display what what we have learned about Rome in history. Our story is about a young boy named George Patton who goes on an adventure. At first his mom was the mom from Flintstones, but since we got feedback from our peers we changed it to make it better. George finds a time machine and finds himself in ancient Rome. He meets a soldier who greets him with the latin language saying, “Romae Estis.” He got introduced to the tortoise formation and George that is very cool. When George came back home he used the formations he saw in Rome and went on to win WWII. We have learned a lot throughout this project, including learning about an important American General. Although this project took time to do, I enjoyed creating this story with my friends. Gratias Tibi. (Thank you). Ben F, Ryan L and Rusty L
For my project I am creating a book based on a young character named, Felix. Through his time in the book, he travels back in time by touching an ancient Roman vase. On the vase, a picture or drawing for old times represents a past event. Some way he becomes the son of Scipio Africanus, a general of a legion fighting against Carthage as he goes back into time. Later on in the book, his father is speared in the heart by a bow allowing Felix to becoming the new leader of his people. What will Felix do? This project has been developed by the questions and wonders by my peers. One example is the background of my character, not diving him straight to traveling back into time to meet his new self. By the end, all I am expecting is a project showing information about my topic. Kai P
My Rome project is two poster boards that tell a story and show what farming and agriculture was like in Ancient Rome. It also compares it with farming and agriculture today. I did this to inform people about Ancient Rome and modern agriculture while also comparing them to show differences. My project has come a long way from the first rough draft. My first draft was small, included no color, and was simply unorganized. By making my project better along the way, it helped me get a better understanding of what I was showing off. Now I am confident in my project, and it looks a whole lot better. Allie M
I am doing a video of me drawing and taking pictures of parts of what I drew so it looks like it's drawing by itself. I wanted to create this because we saw the little clip of the toy story before they made it into a movie and that looked really cool. So I decided to do it even though it looked really hard. I knew it would be awesome if I could make it. I liked how it moved and it looked so I made one about a boy turning sixteen, and he has to go into the military. Jimin H

Jumping into this project wasn’t difficult like I thought. In this project, I worked with Jordan to create a comparison of Ancient Roman agriculture and present day agriculture. We drew two separate scenes. One of how Roman farms looked and another of what modern agriculture looks like now. Something I learned about Rome was that the Romans invented the sickle. It was used to harvest grain. Some present day farmers even still use them. Another fact I learned is that the Romans would use stones to beat their grains to separate the kernels from the food. Today, we use machines called grain separators instead. Jordan J and Lilly G
I am making a poster board. The poster board has two 3D printed objects; one of the objects is the White House the other is a sculpture of Julius Caesar's bust. There is writing on the Julius Caesar side and facts about the Roman Government. On the side with the White House are some facts about the American Government. In the middle of the poster board is how Rome influenced America. I typed the words on Google Docs. I put the words in circles. My project was at first going to be a tri-fold board with facts about the Roman Republic and some facts about the American government. That is how my project progressed over time. Cole G
For my Rome project, I created a completed crossword puzzle with Latin places and activities in English language on one side and the Latin language on the other with descriptions of the terms below. I created this so viewers could learn new things about Rome. In the beginning, my lines were not that straight, and I had some of the order wrong on the numbers. My Latin side was not that easy to read. Since the words on the English and Latin side were different lengths and different letters, I could not get them to look the same on both sides so both sides were different looking. I used a ruler to measure and straighten out the lines and I organized the order of all the descriptions and words. The numbers of the words were the same but in different languages so you can just translate the numbers above the words easily. My poster was bigger than my draft, so I could make my words looks bigger and easier to read. Since the order was messed up, I originally had an across and down side but now the across and down descriptions are color-coded. Adding color to the poster made it look much better, too. Ali W
In my Rome project, I created a poster with Hayden and Jackson showing the similarities between the Roman military and the modern military. In the project, I wrote facts about different events from Rome and from our modern-day military, and put them in order to which of the events were similar to each other. I also originally put them on a timeline to show when exactly each of the events had happened, but me and my partners came to a conclusive decision that we shouldn’t, because we thought that it would look better since we wouldn’t have to draw lines to show which facts go with which facts. This way, they would look all nicely and neatly lined up with each other. We then worked together to create pictures for each of our facts and tried our best to make it as creative as possible. Hayden M, Diego O and Jackson T
Since my subject is on Roman agriculture, I chose to recreate a Roman garden. My inspiration for my garden were fairy gardens. Since they were the closest thing to a mini garden, I chose to base my project on them. I love anything that has to do with plants, so you could see why I wanted to do a garden. Before I could start sketching, I had to do some research first. My first sketch was just a Roman-based garden. I had statues, trees, and other plants that ancient Romans had in their gardens. When I started to build the base of my garden, which was just a box, I realized that I needed more depth to it. So I came up with the idea of layering saucers on-top of each other and filling them with dirt, so I could put real plants in my garden. Paige P
In my Rome project, I have made a poster board. On my poster board, I reveal the Colosseum and the White House. I decided to make this because I want people to know the differences between Roman architecture from then, and how much it influences us today. I chose the Colosseum because it’s one of Rome's most famous pieces of architecture, and I chose the White House because it is another famous piece of architecture influenced by the Romans. In the middle of the board, I have a short story that mostly tells about Roman architecture, while still being funny for kids. Sofia F
I created a small book that has a picture of a Roman Shield. And then above it I spell it in Latin so people can learn some Latin. Below the picture, I wrote two to three sentences about what it is and what it was used for. And then I will drew the same thing but for the modern military. I chose to do this because it seemed fun and I could also learn some Latin words as I was doing this project. I improved over time because this time I am taking my time and it looks a lot more neat than the rough draft. Brandon S
My project is about how the Roman military has helped form today's military. I have stated another name for each Roman weapon, what it was used for, and what materials it was made of. I have greatly improved from my first draft from just pictures and words to accurate drawings and clearer handwriting. The Austin’s Butterfly Effect helped me a lot with my planning and style on how to make my project and how to design it, too. This project will tell you about incredible weapons and incredible innovations. I hope you like my project and maybe even learn something new. Andrew W
For my Rome project I chose to do a comparison of the military today and the military that existed back in Ancient Rome. The Ancient Roman Army is considered one of the greatest of all time. It would conquer its enemies and demolish anything in its path. In modern times, the United States Army is known to be successful and has adopted many of the tactics the Ancient Roman army used. I chose to do this as my project because the United States military is something I am somewhat knowledgeable with, and I was interested about what the Roman army was like. My project improved from the start when I made the decision to change it from a poster to a book. Adam A
The first thing I have to say about this Rome project is that what I ended up with, was not my original idea. My idea that I ended up with was a picture, comparison, storyboard. I had three different comparisons from what farmers did in Ancient Rome to what farmers do in modern times. My comparisons were the production on food, the way of transportation and the production of olive oil. Those were not the three comparisons I started with. I started with the food ones and one on comparing crops. With suggestions from my friends and teachers, I changed it into the transportation one. Harrison B
I am in a group with Alex for the ROMA project. Our project is about comparing our modern day military to the Ancient Roman military, and how Ancient Rome military affected modern days armor, tactics, and weapons. For the project we spray painted a cardboard box, then we put text on the outside of the box comparing ancient Roman military and our modern day military. On the inside of the box with be two battle scenes, one past and the other present. We decided to do military, because Alex and I have a love for military history. We got the box idea from Mr. Evans, which is working out very well. We got feedback with are project when we finished our rough draft, the homeroom, and you gave us constructive feedback on our project. Carson B and Alex W
